The Hornby 0-4-0 models are some of the best starter locomotives that have been around for years, and many have at least one. They've been used as or for unique customs. the only downside many have noted is their impeccable speed, earning them the nickname "Pocket Rocket('s)".

This custom chassis was made as an alternative if you wish to spice up your already existing shells or shells you wish to design and make. as shown in the images above, I put the Beggs Tooling (same mold as Smoky Joe) on it and gave the shell a new look. Does it look out of place given the detail already on it, Yes. But this would be perfect for the E2 shell, Class D shell, custom Tops/shells that use a tender, Industrial diesel shunters, and many more.

Please share your prints of this chassis with the top you put on it! Have it be to this page or my Twitter.

If you don't have a shell for this, I have made a 08 Diesel shunter top you can print to fit on it.: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5389200

as for required parts, here's a list

Motor | Bachmann Edward (MOTOR# 10123): https://estore.bachmanntrains.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=68_93_160&products_id=7240

Gear | Bachmann Edward (Closest to Driving Gear | HTL46-00E02): https://estore.bachmanntrains.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=7236

Chassis | Bachmann Thomas (Model; 587xx-00F01-2): https://estore.bachmanntrains.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=68_93_94&products_id=722

Wheels (16mm Dia) | Bachmann Duck (Via Assembly; Model: 588XX-00K01) / Hornby 0-4-0 wheel tire (w/opsinal provided wheel insert). https://estore.bachmanntrains.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=68_93_599&products_id=5723

Screw fasteners (Bachmann;Model: 587XX-10785) : https://estore.bachmanntrains.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=68_93_94&products_id=3898

Print Settings

Printer Brand:

Prusa

Printer:

I3 MK3S

Rafts:

No

Supports:

Yes

Resolution:

.25mm nozzle

Filament:
(Any) PETG

Notes:

Chassis comes in four (4) parts: motor housings (2 parts) and two pegs for the front.
place all of the prints on the flattest side available.
included are some custom hook loop couplings compatible with other models using similar couplings. print in the same way as the chassis, but doesn't need support.

the Wheel inserts for the Hornby 0-4-0 tire wheels are based on the Bachmann duck and will need support. print on the underside (less detailed with a peg.

Post-Printing

Chassis

Start by replacing the wheels on the stock Bachmann Thomas Chassis with the wheels from Bachmann Duck, the Hornby 0-4-0, or a ~16mm Dia.

*For the 0-4-0 wheels separate the wheels from the axles, then push out the original plastic insert. you can do this with a hard dowel. to help push it out drill a hole in some scrap wood and have it large enough to fit the riding surface through and allow the flange of the wheel to rest on the sides, can get similar results with a pair of players. then press or hammer (use caution) the center out, careful to not bent or damage the flange. the provided file for the Hornby Wheel should be easy to fit but may have slightly different tolerance so it may be too loose or not fit at all and require sanding. once fitted in, remove any access plastic on the end with the metal disk from the tire to make it flush. the holes are large enough to fit the plastic insulators from the wheels that came with the Bachmann chassis.

*Keep the plastic insulator on the Bachmann wheels, try to keep the original insulators that match too the wheel they came with. (Thomas: Blue, Duck; Black)

next solder the motor to the chassis.

then after removing all supports from your print, insert the gear and shaft in place. the gear goes in a specific way to look at how it lines up closely (peg towards the smaller part).

The motor will be sandwiched between the two parts of the chassis.

the clips that go to the front are HIGHLY RECOMENDED if you want your chassis to be secure. insert the tab of the clip into the hole on the side towards the rear of the motor. make sure the clip is facing outward. use a small paperclip inserted into a hole with one end bent to secure it in place and then glue it. the paper clip shouldn't interfere with the hole to the crew. repeat on the other side.

the filler plate is for the saddle tank engine or locos where the clip to the motor is protruding outside of the top shell. it should fit over the motor though may need some maneuvering if a dowel sticks out from the motor.

assemble couplings by putting a paperclip with one end bent through the small hole where the hook goes. then lightly glue one end to keep it from coming out.

you may now screw it into the model.

the chassis has notches included if you use the Bachmann couplings with the protruding area.

Category: Hobby
