Based on my favorite old tripod, this mechanism seems to work better than various things people have tried since. STL files are included for the basic configuration shown here. Some alternate cover plate designs are included in the 123d design file, as well as an example of a 45-degree mounting bracket. Instructions To assemble, you will need: Wood screws (#4, 3/8" to 1/2" in length, or similar) x 4 A compression spring between 6mm and 8mm in diameter A 1/4-20 hex-head screw between 1/4" and 1/2" long. You may need to vary the cover thickness to accommodate the length of 1/4-20 screw you have chosen. 3/8" Works best with the basic cover plate.
