10th Doctor Sonic Screwdriver (Revision)

10th Doctor Sonic Screwdriver (Revision)

thingiverse

For Christmas I wanted to print a 10th Doctor screwdriver for a friend of mine, but had a couple issues with the one I found here on Thingiverse. Some parts refused to slice/print (it looks like this has since been fixed in the original object), and some parts of the assembly seemed unnecessarily tricky. I came up with this revision over the course of a couple hours and thought my changes may be of interest to some. The major changes are: Complete redesign of internal slider, now slices and prints correctly Longer shaft for button, makes it easier to glue button into slider Original center element replaced with one that is half as long and only visible at top Plug added at bottom which allows press-fit assembly without any glue. Post-Printing Assembly The first assembly difference between this revision and the original is the fact that the center element no longer has to go through the whole length of the internal slider. While it arguably looks better to have the element inside the slider (assuming you print it in something clear, of course), it made for a long and rather fragile piece. Second, the addition of the bottom plug means you no longer have to manually line up and glue the bottom piece with the body. I found this made for a less finicky assembly, and even allows for you to take apart the screwdriver if you wanted to down the line. Note: I intentionally made the clearances very tight on some of the pieces as my goal was to sand/file them down to size after printing so I could get a very close fit and avoid using glue completely. Because of that, parts like the bottom plug will likely not fit as soon as they are printed, and will need some attention. Stand The stand the screwdriver is sitting on is uploaded separately here: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2226967
