I came up with an idea based on ItsJustMidnight's XP replacement component. This time around, I designed a bracket that attaches itself directly onto the available spool holder/handle extension part that was part of the special Christmas deal. To get my z axis working, I picked up 8mm rods and a 12" ACME threaded rod from McMaster Carr. Combining this with what I have now gives me at least 175mm functionality on my z axis.
