Recently I made this: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:139318 I didn't want to buy a long tube, because I have a number of spools of different sizes, and the tube would not have fit them all. So I made this mini-tube, which the endcaps snap into. It works just fine. As you can see from the photo, it keeps the spool in place, but allows room for other spools on the threaded rod.
