40MM NATO (RD40X1/7) to Honeywell/Honeywell North® Filter Adapter ======================================================= This prototype design for a 40 MM NATO (RD40X1/7), gas mask thread, to Honeywell/Honeywell North® threaded adapter. The adapter should make RD40x1/7 threaded full face CBRN masks compatible with Honeywell/Honeywell North® threaded chemical, combination, and particle cartridges. Part Description: ============= 40MM_TO_HONEYWELL_NORTH_ADAPTER_MONO.stl Gen 1 (M27x1.5), one piece construction adapter, for Honeywell/Honeywell North® threaded filters that do not require clocking. 40MMTO HONEYWELL_NORTH_ADAPTER_INNER_SHELL_LOW.stl 40MMTO HONEYWELL_NORTH_ADAPTER _OUTER_SHELL_LOW.stl Gen 1 (M27x1.5). two piece construction, not for clocking purposes, but to be also backwards compatibility to outer shell from previous Gen 4 40 MM to 3M™ bayonet adapter if already printed. Tolerance are more forgiving, lower, to enable ease of 3D printer variation. 40MMTO HONEYWELL_NORTH_ADAPTER _ADAPTER_INNER_SHELL_HIGH.stl 40MMTO HONEYWELL_NORTH_ADAPTER _ADAPTER_OUTER_SHELL_HIGH.stl Gen 1 (M27x1.5), two piece construction, not for clocking purposes, but to be also allow backwards compatibility to previous outer shell of Gen 3 40 MM to 3M™ bayonet adapter. Higher tolerance parts requiring proper scaling and calibrated 3D printer. 40MM_TO_HONEYWELL_NORTH_ADAPTER_MONO_GEN2.stl Gen 2 (Revised Threads ~M26x1.57), one piece construction adapter, for Honeywell/Honeywell North® threaded filters that do not require clocking. 40MMTO HONEYWELL_NORTH_ADAPTER_INNER_SHELL_LOW_GEN2.stl Gen 2 (Revised Threads ~M26x1.57), two piece construction, not for clocking purposes, but to be also backwards compatibility to outer shell from previous Gen 4 40 MM to 3M™ bayonet adapter if already printed. Tolerance are more forgiving, lower, to enable ease of 3D printer variation. Outer shell did not change, so did not update. 40MMTO HONEYWELL_NORTH_ADAPTER _ADAPTER_INNER_SHELL_HIGH_GEN2.stl Gen 2 (Revised Threads ~M26x1.57). two piece construction, not for clocking purposes, but to be also allow backwards compatibility to previous outer shell of Gen 3 40 MM to 3M™ bayonet adapter. Higher tolerance parts requiring proper scaling and calibrated 3D printer. Outer shell did not change, so did not update. And additional model added, scaling down the filter side attachment only by 1%, as global reduction in size would make RD40x1/7 fall outside tolerance set forth from STANAG 4155. And decided to drop two piece construction model, since Honeywell filter cartridges do not require clocking. Disclaimers/Risks: ============== 1.) Use Proper Gaskets It would appear Honeywell/Honeywell North® filters have gasket on the filter side, but check to ensure gasket/o-rings properly sealed between cartridge and threads. Source a gasket or O-ring with a 27 mm OD [Gen 1] or 26.016 mm OD or 1" OD [Gen 2]. 2.) Perform Proper Negative Pressure Test Follow SSPs established by your institution or workplace for further guidance. But in general, don your respirator, adjust straps till taught against face, ensuring no obstructions around the periphery of the seal against face either due from hair, facial hair, or otherwise. Exhale deeply. Cover all inhalation ports. (Typically, most full face or half face respirators have two filters, so cover those intake ports with your hands. If your running only one filter, ensure the opposite port has filter cap in place.) Now inhale deeply. The mask should suck tightly against your face without any air leakages. Re-test if adjustments are required at gasket/o-ring interfaces at the adapter. 3.) Use At Own Risk – Temporarily Solution Only Until Supply Chain Normalizes 3D printing materials are not resistant to many solvents, are water soluble, and degrade when exposed to chemicals, heat, and UV/sunlight. 3D printing this adapter is only a temporarily ad-hoc solution against biological contagions. In addition to using a properly calibrated 3D printer, due to tolerances of adapters, if possible perform hot nozzle pass on all exterior surfaces, to reduce surface porosity. Highly recommended users apply a thin layer of polyurethane clear coat on all exterior surfaces, spray or dip based methods, to help resiliency and durability for repeated sterilization and to reduce fomite transmission in printed infill layers. Once supply chains return to normal, users should purchase OEM OSHA/NIOSH/EN standard approved respirators, adapters and accessories for their institution and workplaces. Dev. Notes: ========= 04/07/2020 - Initial model release. In work, pending support and feedback from 3D printing community for any fitment and model revisions. This is a proof of concept as I do not have either Honeywell/Honeywell North ® respirator or filters to check and ensure fitment.[Gen 1 - M27x1.5 Thread for Honeywell/Honeywelll North ® respirators, As Reported By Clownrock95] https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4252141/files 04/08/2020 - Revised model, due to 3D printing community feedback on fitment issues with threads, see comments. Unknown if Honeywell/Honeywell North ® respirators have legacy and newer threads to explain discrepancy, or if chasing 3D printing tolerances. But updated threads to match erniepike's Honeywell/Honeywelll North ® adapters. [Gen 2 - Updated w/ erniepike's Revised Threads] https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4269355/files 04/14/2020 - Updated with engraved markings to differentiate between adapters. 04/30/2020 - Gen. 4 features the following changes: (1) rolled updated underside geometry to improve 3D printing workflow without overhang support at wrenching ears to this adapter, and (2) reduced grip length of threads based on feedback that original OEM thread engagement only about 2 mm deep. Additionally, only the M26x1.57 threaded version was updated, since reports are that the M26 rev works. Thanks to artemisw5854 make of the 3M to Honeywell version here, showing compatibility with North 7583P100L filter: https://www.thingiverse.com/make:792202 However, jlwatchman reported fitment issues with North 7580P100L, unless scaled down by 1%. However, a global scale reduction in model size would make RD40x1/7 not within spec per STANAG 4155. Although this RD40x1/7 adapter's external major diameter was designed higher at 39.9, upper limit at 40, but scaling down by 1% results in lesser than 39.70 mm as called forth by STANAG 4155. Therefore, a separate model revision was made with only scaling down the previous Gen M26x1.57 by 1% to obtain M25.889x1.554 on this newer model which should work better with North 7580P100L. We are still chasing 3D printing tolerances, manufacturer tolerances, or both, but are converging on an optimized solution. Credits: ======= Thanks to Clownrock95 for providing the original Honeywell/Honeywelll North ® adapters, original spec of M27x1.5, and special thanks to erniepike's trial and error process to discern actual threads.
