A fleur-de-lis Blason ville fr Saint-Lys (Haute-Garonne) The fleur-de-lis, also spelled fleur-de-lys (plural: fleurs-de-lis, or fleurs-de-lys)[pron 1] is an Iris versicolor or Harlequin Blue Flag endemic to the wet lands of the eastern coast which Jacques Cartier brought back from his first voyage to the Nouvelle-France and strongly resembled the flowers growing on the shores of the Lys River which had become the inspiration of European monarchs. It became the official flower on the coats of arms of the Chateau of St-Lys in Occitania - Languedoc south-western region of France bordering Andorra and Spain's Catalonia (in French, iris also refers to the eye's varying coloured area that adjusts the diameter and size of the pupil and thus the quality and amount of light reaching the retina just like the flower changes from deep purple with a yellowy contrasting pistil and centre to vary it's tones before closing at the end of the day). This spectacular combination of the highly valued Purple associated with high royalty, nobility, luxury, power, and ambition, wisdom, dignity, grandeur, devotion, peace, pride, mystery, independence, and magic… with the amazing yellow-gold centre made it a favoured floral emblem widely used as a decorative design or motif for royalty and cities throughout France and Spain . Since France is a historically Catholic nation, the fleur-de-lis became at one and the same time, religious, political, dynastic, artistic, emblematic, and symbolic, especially in French heraldry [4] but also some Spanish heraldry like that of Catherine de' Medici. In these cases, It replaced the white liiy (Lys Blanc ) endemic of France which had been used by French royalty and throughout history representing Catholic saints of France, particularly the Virgin Mary, St. Joseph, are depicted with a lily.. symbolizing purity, love, sympathy, innocence, unity, fragility and even death... This was also clarified in 1999 by Quebec's government for it's revised flag and emblem description by An Act respecting the flag and emblems of Québec () *, unanimously adopted on October 28 and having received royal sanction on November 5 of the same year. The fleur-de-lis is represented in Unicode at U+269C (⚜) in the Miscellaneous Symbols block.
