Évora Column This column depict some historical events and heroes of Evora and Portuagal at large. it stands on a square base , and is located near Largo da Porta de Moura in Évora at the coordinates of N 38⁰ 34’ 14.181087” W 7⁰54’ 19.551603” . . It faces SW, NW, NE, SE at the base, moving towards the top of the column there is a slow and gradual twist, so that the four sides are facing cardinal directions of north, south, east, and west. The column contains relief of events from the history of Évora . The column itself with the relief sculptures and inscriptions describing it , can be divided into bottom, middle and upper part. The topmost part of the column contains a façade .The front face of the column is towards the southwest direction, and it contains a relief carving of Giraldo at the bottom part. Giraldo is depicted on a horse and with sword on one hand with severed head and with the inscription “1166 Giraldo sem pavour” on top of the relief which translates to Gerald the fearless.
