The abacus atop this capital is known as "The Price at His Toilet". Admitted to the court of King Darius the Mede in Babylon where he was in exile, the prophet Daniel falls victim to a conspiracy and is thrown into the lions' den to be devoured. Crouching in the centre in the conventional posture of a praying figure, Daniel is flanked by two lions. The inscription identifies the scene: "DANIEL INTER LEONES". Overcome by the miracle of God having saved Daniel, Darius has him released from the lions' den; those who accused the prophet are cast into the den in turn. According to the Bible, they were "devoured immediately" - hence the second inscription "DEVORATI SUNT IN MOMENTO".
