This modification lets you mount a Sony action cam of the HDR-AS family (AS15, AS30, AS100, ...) in a standard GoPro low cost chinese 2D gimbal like this one. Thanks to the slim form factor of these action cams it can yield a rotation of about +70°-180° pitch and +-100° roll, much more than a GoPro could achieve using the standard fixture. To implement this all you need to do is to disassemble the pitch motor and its mounting arm from the gimball, unscrewing a total of 9 screws. The roll motor and its frame won't need to be disassembled. The center of gravity is balanced around the motors axis with a slight deviation (~1mm) toward the bottom, to ease the work of the gimbal controller. I switched the sensor position from bottom to top, to give more range to the pitch motor. In the pictures above the gimbal is mounted on a Tarot 650 frame using my custom fixture. Print Settings Rafts: Doesn't Matter Supports: No Post-Printing Print the 2 parts Disassemble from the gimbal the GoPro fixture, the pitch motor and its mounting arm. Save all the screws. Detach the sensor from the GoPro fixture Mount the printed arm on the roll motor Mount the pitch motor on the printed arm Mount the printed camera fixture on the pitch motor Attach the sensor on the flat bit on the top side of the camera fixture using glue or double sided tape Rearrange the cables Place the camera in the fixture. Friction alone should be enough to keep it in place, however if you want to be safe you can fix it with a rubber band. Connect the gimbal to the PC using simpleBGC software Switch the Z axis direction from -Z to +Z and confirm that the sensor is working correctly, if not play with the axis direction until it is. Power the gimbal and adjust the PID gains to the new load. You can find tutorials on how to fix these parameters on youtube.
