Aizen Myo-o, the 'Passionate King of Light' has the power to crush desire and free the beliver from lust. He has a lion headdress and sits on a lotus throne. His six arms usually carry a bow and arrow, thunderbolts, and other ritual objects, although some are missing here. The sculpture was originally brilliantly coloured, and has been repainted, probably in the 1800s. "In truth, the esoteric [tantric] doctrines are so profound as to defy their enunciation in writing. With the help of painting, however, their obscurities may be understood. The various attitudes and mudras [ritual gestures] of the holy images all have their souce in the Buddha's love, and one may attain buddhahood at the sight of them... Art is what reveals to us the state of perfection" Monk Kukai (AD 774-835)
