Alstom Metropolis Metro trains' structural supports are now lighter and more affordable. The selected design utilizes standard IPE140 S275JR steel profiles, which rely on reusing the existing solebar and frame interface. Other profiles and materials were considered, but none matched the IPE140 S275JR's combination of light weight, sufficient strength, and lower cost. The cost savings mainly come from a ¾ reduction in welding requirements. The original support beam design weighed 282kg/set of five and cost $1,800; each support was 56.4kg at $360. The new design weighs only 38kg, with an approximate cost of $220 including solebars, equating to a total weight of 190kg and a cost of $1,250.
