Amunition Carrier
sketchfab
Our Ammunition Bearer is an Aussie artilleryman in Gallipoli during the sweltering summer of 1915. He sports a slouch hat with the brim down, and shirt and trousers with sleeves and legs cut short to reduce flapping in the wind. Between his legs lies a shell for an 18-pounder field gun - it's estimated that Aussie forces used around 500 such guns during the Great War. The Ammunition Bearer wears a sturdy canvas jacket with deep tube pockets that enable him to carry multiple shells at once. In the rough terrain of the beachhead at Gallipoli, held from April to December 1915, tasks typically handled by pack animals were taken on by men. We can picture our Ammunition Bearer straining under his load as he hauls it up the steep, winding dirt paths from the supply dump on the beach to a gun position in one of the few areas of flat ground behind the Aussie front lines.
