The ring-shaped frame of this brooch is common to both brooches and buckles found in the late 1200s to 1400s. These annular designs functioned as brooches, at the necks of garments, or as buckles, to secure hose or breeeches. This brooch was found during archaeological excavations at Edinburgh Castle between 1989-1991. For information on visiting Edinburgh Castle, see our website. dia 44mm EDIN298 | Rae Project
