Ant Trap - for smallish hummingbird feeders

thingiverse

We have a over abundance of sugar ants where I live. These are the most persistent little buggers ever! Once they find sweetness anywhere they monitor it forever. One of those things are hummingbird feeders. Somehow, 1,000's of these little monsters found their way -inside- to the nectar. I really don't want to give up hummingbird watching just because of the ants. Today I am trying the attached file. It has a 3mm deep moat about 14mm wide. Suggestions to date have pointed to vegetable oil as a means to break up the path. However, there are also commercial pastes that could suffice if you wanted to turn this upside-down. I suggest printing this with ABS or Nylon to prevent the organic breakdown of PLA. Be sure the print is structurally sound before hanging significant weight on it. Scaling up is certainly an option. This print takes about 1hr to print without supports. If you find good barrier materials, please share your successes. Edit: You will find a second 3" tall version in the Thing Files section. Thanks for the suggestion PonzLL.
