Let me know if I can be of further help!!!!!
Antique Chess Set
This part was made with Tinkercad.
Edit the part online at https://tinkercad.com/things/4vC2GVtlIRM
Tinkercad can actually do some complex modeling, and it takes no time at all to learn it!
This is my chess entry into the contest. My goals were...
...1. to make a set that resembled an antique chess set. It's mostly from memory and Googling. (Yes, the strange queen skirt was on the queen on the real sets. If you Google, you'll see some chess sets that have that on it). I had to cheat in a few places to make sure it was printable, and fit the 70X20mm size, so it is by no means historically correct or even correct within the bounds of physics. But neither were these old sets.
...2. to make it so that you could print in contrasting colors with a dual head extruder. I have included the broken apart STLs (AntiqueKingDEA, AntiqueKingDEB, AntiqueRookDEA, AntiqueRookDEB,etc). I also, in Tinkercad, added tabs for aligning the silver and gold portions if exported separately. They are in the bottom of the chess piece stand. These tabs should help you if you don't want to use my dual extruded STLs. Finally, I added negative space (holes) wherever the different colored items meet, so there is no overlap. Warning... I have never done modeling for dual extrusion, so I might not be doing it right, but from what I have read, this is the way.
...3. to make it printable without support. I think I achieved that mostly. Each model is made up of pieces that have some kind of support or oval beneath them, so it should print pretty well without having to use support. If you need to add support, it’s easy in Tinkercad, just add some elongated spheres, and exacto them off.
...4. highly detailed, so it could be scaled up and still print nicely, or if you don’t have your 3d printer yet, you could order through Ponoko or something. (get a 3d printer)
I also have included a chess board that is elevated to display the pieces if you want to get fancy. I have a broken them up as well so that you can print on a Makerbot cupcake, and I also have provided a dual extrusion version of them. (DEA and DEB at the end of the filename means two items can be combined to make one item) I also included a standard chess board.
If you have a CNC machine, you could use the DEA and DEB full size chessboard files for the chess boards to make a cool wooden chessboard.
I have included a ton of options for people with smaller or bigger platforms, dual extrusion, etc. Since this makes up 50 files, please see the Google docs link readme at https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AvySsFLIQ3GhdGt6QVloRmZiazBNNlRkdU1lVk9XR3c to better understand what files will work for your needs.
NOTICE! I did not realize the really long filenames would make it so difficult to see which STL is which, so I have added all the STLs to categorized rar files and posted them at the bottom left of the files. Use the rar files and the google docs and it should be very easy to print the models you want!
They are in order posted:
Chess pieces.rar
Chess pieces dual extrusion.rar
Whole chessboards.rar
Whole chessboards dual extrusion.rar
Chessbrds 4 parts.rar
Chessbrds 4 parts dual extrusion.rar
EDIT: As I said, I will modify these based on suggestions, what works, etc. Thus, I have modified the queen Tinkercad files so that her arms are a little shorter. Let me know what works and what doesn't and I will fix em!

Instructions

!!!!Click on the download this thing button, and scroll way down to the bottom. don't have a dual extrusion printer, you can still be creative and modify the files for colorful items.
For example, you could print the shields and swords in a different color, by pulling them off the models in Tinkercad and printing them seperately.
Here are a few Tinkercad tips I have.

Use the shapes that are provided when possible. You can deconstruct a few of my pieces and find the letters that I used as objects in places, and for the crown on the queen's chess you might recognize an Easter object.

When resizing a complex group of objects, align them to the x or y axis to avoid undesirable twisting.

Group often. This makes it easier when selecting primitives to be sure you grasp the right one.

You can use a cube primitive, rotated to 38-45 degrees to make sure your overhangs will be ok in printing on your 3d printer. My Makerbot does pretty well at 38o. If yours can't do that, you can easily modify the Tinkercad models using a rotated cube.

You can avoid measuring so much by building some simple primitive groups. I have included a link to Tinkercad of what I used for measuring. ()

The addition of "holes" allows for very complex modeling, but is VERY processor intensive, as Boolean is in any modeling program. Use it too much, and you will push the limits of your browser, computer, and Tinkercad. These models are pretty complex, as they rely heavily on the Boolean functions in Tinkercad. Have some patience when loading them into your browser.

Save copies as you go, by clicking on the "duplicate and tinker" link. Things happen over the web, so make backups as you go, just as any other software.

If you have a complex model, and you are doing something like rotating or moving a primitive or group quite a bit, move it a little at a time. This will help with timing issues between your browser and the Tinkercad server. Also, if you have a complex model, and do an undo, wait for it to happen before you continue.

It is extremely easy to make models for dual extrusion (assuming I am doing it right) Just take the parts you want in your second stl, group them, duplicate it, turn it into holes, and then group the holes with the objects for your first stl.
If you copy the file in Tinkercad and open it up, you can scale it up if you want to make detailed changes. I made it larger and scaled it down to fit the required size. You can also add your own logo to the king's shield. Create your logo, and place a "hole version" on it. Then put the actual version on it. See my Tinkercad King example. https://tinkercad.com/things/htVgyjhWwoB
I have run the main STLs through Netfabb to repair them if needed, although I have been able to print these directly from Tinkercad.
PS, I will still work on these files after the contest, and If you noticed something you would like changed or if I made an error, please let me know and I will continue on improving.
EDIT: I just added some lite versions as well, that load into tinkercad quickly and slice quickly. They will not be dual extrusion or have nearly the detail, though:
Lite King Version https://tinkercad.com/things/9zVpk0chHd7
Lite Queen Version https://tinkercad.com/things/a88nNntLwnP
Lite Bishop Version https://tinkercad.com/things/6UqyGJdspuv
Lite Knight Version https://tinkercad.com/things/hBUhoQN77fn
Lite Rook Version https://tinkercad.com/things/6IllDJf8hH9
Lite Pawn Version https://tinkercad.com/things/kcjWAzL0ym7

Category: Chess
