I got an iPad and there was no holder for an Apple Pencil if the Keyboard was attached and I was worried about losing it during travel. The thin piece fits between the iPad and the magnetic case. Friction should hold it in place. The pencil fits pretty snug, but I've rounded the edges so it should scratch it unless the scaling is off.
