The ARA San Juan (S-42) was a German-made TR-1700 type submarine, which from 1985 served in the Argentine Navy, until its disappearance at the end of 2017. This type of submarine has conventional diesel-electric propulsion with snorkel system, designed for attacks against surface forces, submarines, merchant traffic and mining operations. On 15 November 2017 it disappeared in the Argentine sea with 44 people on board (43 men and 1 woman). The Argentine Navy lost contact with the submarine as it was moving from Ushuaia towards Mar del Plata, off San Jorge Gulf, possibly due to its sinking as a result of an implosion. Eighteen countries collaborated in the search and rescue operation (SAR), during fifteen days, without results. The following year, the government hired the private company Ocean Infinity and began a second search that concluded when the ship was found on November 17, 2018, very close to the point of disappearance, at a depth of 907 meters.
