Arizona Terrain

This is the state of Arizona as a topographical model. Mountains are up to 8mm high, the base thickness is 4mm (yes, we did stretch the z-axis because if it was to scale the model would be pretty much flat). You probably knew this, but what you see in the north west (top left) where the triangle resolution is dense and elevation changes steep, that's the Grand Canyon. The terrain in the south of the state is also quite interesting, it looks like the spikey mountain ranges are poking through the otherwise flat Basin and Range Province. The model is generated from the SRTM v4 dataset (http://srtm.csi.cgiar.org/) and using a Naturalearth Shapefile (http://naturalearth.com). It's all smoothed, meshed, and simplified using that crazy beast of unmaintainable software sitting on our server (next to terrabytes of terrain data) which we wrote for our website printablegeography.com. If you need topography models (of states, counties, countries, whatever) for teaching or other exciting purposes, we'd love to hear from you! Instructions We haven't made this one yet, but it's sized to comfortably fit the built tray of a Makerbot Replicator 2. Of course you can easily resize it to fit your requirements. If you order this from a 3D printing service, we strongly suggest printing Arizona in sandstone material.
