I recently found myself in need of a good way to protect artisan keycaps during shipping, so I broke out my calipers and designed this admittedly super simple box.

I use half of a standard cotton ball in the top to keep the keycap from moving around and I secure the top and bottom pieces with a bit of masking/painters tape. Taller caps will probably require a bit less padding, shorter caps likely require a bit more.

I'm quite certain that someone more skilled than myself could have come up with a nifty way to keep the two pieces together without the use of tape, but this works best for my use case. The first versions I printed were friction fit and I found that the force it took to remove the top combined with the small surface area available on the sides of the bottom had a very high likelihood of sending the keycap inside flying across the room once the pieces came apart. Given how rare and expensive some of these keycaps can be, I wanted to avoid that.

The first versions I tested also had an MX-style stem in the bottom to mount the keycap on. This presented two problems: 1. I didn't like bothering with the tolerances for the stem and 2. not all of my keycaps were MX-style and I wanted to be able to print these and keep them on hand whenever I needed to ship something, no matter the stem type.

That was a lot of words for such a simple model…
