This is an incredibly historic marble sculpture of Asclepius, a legendary hero and deity in ancient Greek faith and mythology, portrayed leaning on his trusty walking-stick with a serpent wrapped snuggly around it. Asclepius embodies the healing aspect of medical arts; his daughters are Hygieia ("Hygiene", the goddess/personification of health, cleanliness, and sanitation), Iaso (the goddess of recuperation from illness), Aceso (the goddess of the healing process), Aglæa (the goddess of good health's radiant glow), and Panacea (the universal remedy's goddess). He was linked with the Roman/Etruscan god Vediovis and the Egyptian Imhotep. As one of Apollo's sons, he shares the epithet Paean ("the Healer") with his father. The rod of Asclepius, a serpent-entwined staff, remains an enduring symbol of medicine to this day. Those physicians and attendants who served this deity were known as the Therapeutae of Asclepius.
