Athena at The Louvre, Paris
myminifactory
This Pentelic marble sculpture was crafted circa 50 AD and showcases Athena, a central figure within the group sculpture "Athena and Marsyas," reconstructed by Myron in Berlin. The figures draped in peplos appear throughout antique replicas, most notably conserved in Frankfurt, enabling us to identify the walking figure as Athena with certainty. The original bronze sculpture is attributed to the renowned sculptor Myron, created around 450 BC within the Acropolis of Athens, where it stood beside Marsyas. This subject illustrates the invention of the flute: the goddess rejecting and casting aside the instrument, only for Marsyas to discover and claim it as his own. This theme is a popular subject in theater, ultimately leading to Marsyas' tormenting and flaying at the hands of Cupid and Athena.
