This square ground level boulder sits on the west side of Backstone Beck on Rombalds Moor, West Yorkshire. Recorded as IAG283 in Boughey & Vickerman’s 2003 publication ‘Prehistoric Rock Art of the West Riding’, the stone was added to ERA by the CSI: Rombalds Moor Project as ‘Backstone Beck 04’. This very coarse grained rock has unusually deep grooves, around 35 cups, 2 with rings and an oval around 2 cups. All the motifs are in a good state of preservation, presumably as a result of the stone being covered…or it’s fairly modern. In 2014, some work was undertaken by City of Bradford Met District Council’s Countrside Service and Historic England to redirect a path away from the stone, as cyclists were running over it. ERA record: https://archaeologydataservice.ac.uk/era/section/panel/overview.jsf?eraId=2545 Historic England scheduling: https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1012958 Model created from 8 photos captured in July 2013.
