Bar Keepers Friend Top & Bottom

Bar Keepers Friend Top & Bottom

IMPORTANT NOTE: I joke about the whole "fire hazard" thing in this post, but there are two important facts: 1) My dad is a fire chief, and he'd have my ass if he thought I was joking about fire and 2) in the product's MSDS it clearly states: "Not a fire hazard. Use extinguishing media appropriate for surrounding fire." So if this product does, indeed, cause a fire, you're doing something wrong! I love the product Bar Keepers Friend. Even though I know there should be an apostrophe somewhere in that name, the product itself is perfect. It's based on oxalic acid which, of course, is acidic and corrosive. You probably don't want to breathe this stuff in, or keep it on your skin for prolonged periods. But it's great, fan-fricken-tastic, at cleaning up things that need an acid-clean, and a scrubby, abrasive clean. I use it all the time in my kitchen, so I buy the larger containers (21 oz) at Sam's Club. The problem with larger containers of anything is that sometimes you don't use the whole container in a reasonable amount of time, especially in a home kitchen. If you only use this container (a great value, by the way!) once a week, it might take you a year or more to go through the product. This means a couple of things: 1) If you have it right next to your sink - the perfect place for it - you might get water on the counter below the container. The container bottom is made of metal (yay!), but the bottom is very thin, and the rest of the container is basically a cardboard tube. Yay for recycling, boo for longevity. If you let this container sit on an on-again off-again wet counter for a few months, it'll start to bleed a little. And, again, oxalic acid is a corrosive substance. So maybe you don't want it leeching out onto your counter. That sucks. 2) Having it next to the sink, there are probably going to be water droplets flying all over the place if you're a spastic dish cleaner like I am. I go to town on dishes, and sometimes things splash. It's a splash zone. It's a sink, in the kitchen. You're going to get wet. Sadly, the powdered form of Bar Keepers Friend won't stay a powder very long if you keep hitting it with water. Every time I buy one of these, first the top gets all crusty (ick), and then the bottom starts to fall out (boo). That's just a matter of time in the kitchen. What can you do? Well, you obviously guessed what you can do: you can 3D print this awesome top and bottom piece! The bottom Thing fits perfectly (snugly!) around the 73.5mm diameter container, while the top Thing fits loosely around the top, so you can easily remove it. Eventually, I may make a snug-fitting top, that presses against the metal top, and gives you holes, that way you have a flat surface to wipe away if it starts to get crusty. Now, I know what you're saying: "But you have no idea if oxalic acid interacts with PLA!" That's right. I don't. I honestly have no idea if I just put a fire hazard in my kitchen. If you think that there's a possibility that oxalic acid might interact poorly with PLA (or whatever magic filament you want to print this with), please read up on the two to make sure things are cool. They'll probably be cool. But still...if the fire chief comes by after a major house fire and blames my Thing and your container of Bar Keepers Friend as the source of ignition, do not sue me! Live and learn, and please, post a comment featuring the lesson you learned, along with an I Made One, featuring the ruins of your life caused by my Thing. I promise everyone will be supportive to your face, and will wait until later to laugh behind your back. You couldn't have known! Or could have you? No one knows! But I do know that this idea is fantastic, and you'll probably enjoy it a lot, and it probably won't catch your house on fire. I would say try to round to the 0.5mm. And then, I will upload a special version with an I.D. that matches (tight for the bottom), and an I.D. that is 1mm larger, for the top. We can iterate until it's perfect, and I can even put your name right in the Summary and/or in the STL files themselves. Please don't forget to do the I Made One if you do, because it's cool to see people using the Things here!
