Barricade is one of many affected by the silver storm, a cataclysmic event that gave a percentage of the population superhuman abilities. This affected Stanley by giving him the ability to manifest opaque force fields to either cover himself in a layer of force armor or broaden it to protect others. Since the events of the silver storm New York has been thrown into chaos and only the efforts of government supers like Barricade working with civil authorities prevents complete anarchy from being subjected on a helpless populace.
