Bed Desk Organizer

Bed Desk Organizer

When considering what would help make at home learning more manageable, I thought of how many students don’t have a dedicated desk when not at school or the library, and that many do a good chunk of their work on their bed or on the couch. I looked at a tray table which I use to work on my bed, and thought of ways I could improve that for doing schoolwork, and what organization tools many including myself use on a regular basis(phone stand, post-it holder, pencil cup, etc. ) so I could add those to the design somehow. I needed something modular so each student could change it to fit their needs, with it all being part of the same system to make readjusting as simple and easy as possible. I designed this bed desk to help students with their online learning by giving them a custom workspace that they may not have already had. The biggest issue that I had to face was finding the right tolerance for the parts. I wanted there to be enough wiggle room for people to pop out the pins holding the parts together with nothing more than a pencil. But I also needed there to be enough stability for nothing to wobble after all parts are put together and in use. I designed, sliced and printed several test parts until eventually settling on .01” extra space for each hole. If I were to redesign this bed desk organizer, I would find a way to lessen the material used to make it. It currently uses a fair amount of filament to produce a full desk, legs and a few attachments. I could try to do this by hollowing out the bottoms of some of the parts using the ‘shell’ tool. However, makers can substantially lessen the amount of material used by opting out of making the organizer a ‘tray table’ of sorts and solely use the attachments in tandem with one another without using the leg parts. The use of 3D printing is going to help strengthen and improve this design because after printing the bed desk organizer and learning how it works, users can look at the .dxf files shared in this thingiverse post to find out the measurements and create their own attachments to make the bed desk organizer more customizable to fit their needs, and possibly even better than it is now.
