Machinist's vises are typically manufactured using ductile iron rather than cast iron. Although they are formed in a mold, ductile iron is distinguished from cast iron due to its nodular graphite structure which prevents cracking. This distinction is essential in vise construction as high-quality vises utilize nodular or spheroidal (ductile) iron, while low-cost economy vises (often imported) are made of brittle grey cast iron.
