Benchmarking of 3D printing

At the Politecnico di Torino in Italy, we are investigating the aesthetical and technical performance of 3D printers by means of a benchmarking activity. The main aim of this activity is to create a ranking that can compare the performance of 3D printing machines. For this specific purpose, we have designed a methodology to quantify the performance of the machine by producing the enclosed reference part. The reference part was designed with the aim of to include all possible features that can be representative for typical 3D printing defects that affect the aesthetic quality and functionality. The production of this reference part is simple and fast because of the small dimensions and can help the user to understand easily the limits of machine and how to optimize the process parameters to produce a specific feature. If you want to perform this evaluation you can print one replica of the reference part (without using support structure) and write to me to have the guidelines to assess your part. Then we will elaborate your evaluation and we will give you the final score for your 3D printer and its placements among already evaluated 3D printers. Should you be interested in contributing to our research, please get in contact with me by email (manuela.galati@polito.it). Thanks!
