The first submachine gun to see action was the MP 18, crafted by Theodor Bergmann Abteilung Waffenbau. It entered German Army service in 1918 during World War I as the go-to firearm for Sturmtruppen, elite units trained for intense trench warfare. Although production of the MP 18 ceased in the 1920s, its innovative design paved the way for nearly all submachine guns produced between 1920 and 1960.
