On March 21, 2008, Kurganmashzavod unveiled a modernized variant of the vehicle and was designated as the BMD-4M. The primary cause of the alterations was due to the bankruptcy of the original manufacturer being the Volgograd tractor factory. In 2008 it is planned to carry out comprehensive testing modernized BMD-4 program agreed with the Chief Armor Management (Bolshoi[who?]) of the Ministry of Defense and the VDV.
