It was designed from the same prototype aircraft as the Boeing 707-130. It is the first air refueling aircraft that was jet powered. It entered service with the United States Air Force in 1957. It has been in continuous service with the USAF for almost 60 years. It is one of six military aircraft in continuous use for more than 50 years. This is the main type of air refueling tanker flown by the USAF but it is supplemented by the KC-10 and will be replaced by the KC46 Pegasus.
