She participated in the 1864–70 War of the Triple Alliance between Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay against Paraguay. The ship was built at the Laird & Brothers shipyard in Birkenhead, England, and was launched at sea in 1866. The Lima Barros was the first and only ship to be named, a tribute to Francisco José de Lima Barros, who was killed on board of the Corvette Jequitinhonha, in the Naval Battle of Riachuelo, on June 11, 1865. He was sent to the front still in 1866 participating in the battles of Curupaiti and later Humaitá. At dawn on March 2, 1868, Cabral and Lima Barros were approached in the vicinity of Humaitá by 24 enemy canoes disguised as camalotes with about 300 men on board. The canoes came sailing together in a pair of twos with 20 rods of separation from each other, so that they would be tied to the side of the ships by the same current. The surprise allowed the attackers to seize the deck of the Lima Barros and Cabral ships, whose crew locked themselves in the towers, but soon the Brazil and Herval corvettes intervened, strafing the occupied decks. The Paraguayans withdrew after suffering about 200 casualties. Brazilians had 40 casualties.
