Most users of the Breville Barista Express espresso machine get frustrated when using the built in grinder, as the coffee grinds tends to spill out of the portafilter. This dosing funnel attaches to the 54mm portafilter to provide additional room for ground coffee, but still retains the ability to use and trigger the built in grinder.

CHANGES

I have added a version 1 which is identical to the original version, except the front tab is 1mm longer as some people reported the grinder switch wouldn't trigger. I have personally not experienced this issue, so let me know if the extended tab works.

Also new is a version 2 which has a reshaped top that aligns better in the grinder, but has to be oriented correctly when installing on the portafilter. Both version 1 & 2 have a directional indicator on the longer tab to aid orientation.

By request the inside of the funnel has been enlarged to allow a 54mm tamper to be used with the funnel mounted. I personally use a distribution tool before tamping, so I remove the funnel prior to this step.

PRINTING

Versions:

The files have a version suffix, used as follows:

V0 Original version

V1 Original version with 1mm extended front tab

V2 Updated tabs to align better in the portafilter, also has 1mm extended front tab

There are 2 models:

For the single piece model, you will need to use supports when printing. Named funnel_complete_v

The 5-piece model has a top, bottom & 3 hook parts. This model can be printed without supports and assembled using adhesive after printing. Named funnel_top_v, funnel_bottom_v & funnel_hook_v

Slicer Settings:

20-30% Rectilinear infill

Turn off Only infill where needed (if using Slic3r/PrusaSlicer/SuperSlicer)

0.20mm layer height (or lower)

FINISHING & ASSEMBLY

You may need to sand the inside of the funnel to prevent the coffee grinds from sticking.

With the 5-piece version, the top and bottom halves have 3 holes each for alignment.

The holes can be drilled out to 1.5-2.0mm and 7.5-10mm long pins used to align the 2 halves during assembly.

Pieces of filament, wire or carbon rod are ideal for this.

The 5-piece version has to be assembled using your choice of adhesive. I used regular super glue (Cyanocrylate) for the prototype. If you use ABS filament, acetone or nail polish remover works well.

Print Settings

Rafts: No

Supports: No

Layer Height: 0.2mm

Infill: 20-30%

Filament: PETG

Notes:

This should work fine printed with any filament

Designed in Fusion 360. I have removed the design file as a few unscrupulous people are selling my design online in violation of the license.
