Culture: Bronze Age. Material: Bronze Diam. 63.8cm Accession No: HCA 457 Current Location: The Hunt Museum, Limerick. Circular, Yetholm type shield of thin sheet-bronze, beaten to an even thickness of 0.5mm. Decorated with 11 concentric repoussé ribs and 11 rows of low hemispherical bosses with a hollow, rounded conical central boss. The rim is rolled over. Six tears and one perforation represent damage from the rear and front. It is unlikely that this object was ever used in combat. Yetholm shields have been found in England (15), Scotland (9), Wales (2) and Ireland (2). This one was recovered from the Thames at Halliford Upper, Walton-on-Thames. More.
