This is a portrait of Claudius, who was Roman emperor from 41 to 54 and was the first of the Roman emperors to have been born outside of Italy. His depiction is actually reworked from a statue of his predecessor (and nephew), Caligula. The fringe and facial feautres were changed, but the top and back of the head remain untouched.
