For the joint project I decided to create a butterfly using 2 print in place hinges. To start, I created my hinge joints following Dr. Plante’s online tutorial. Initially, a sketch was created using the line, 3 point rectangle, offset, and trim tools. This created the basic shapes for the hinge, which were then extruded to form the bodies. From here, cones were added to one body utilizing the circle, extrusion, taper, and mirror tools. In order to create a functional hinge, the two bodies were combined by cutting away the cones on the second body. Next, a fillet was added to the edges of the bodies, to ensure that the hinge would print in place without the use of supports. This joint was then copied, resulting in 2 hinges. From here, I imported a butterfly canvas into Fusion 360 and created an outline using the spline tool. Next, I extruded the butterfly away from the original bodies, and extruded the eyeballs inwards. Finally, an stl file was upload to Cura and printed on the Ultimaker 3.
