This intricately carved steatite button mould, originating from Mediaeval times, was used to cast buttons. Animal horn, the most likely material, would be softened in boiling water before being pressed into the mould and left to harden. Buttons could also have been made from metals with low melting points like silver or pewter.\n​The mould measures approximately 150 mm long by 40 mm wide.
