Camp Stove RedesignAnyone that still enjoys camping in a wall tent understands the need for a good camp stove when it gets chilly. The traditional camp stoves for wall tents are enclosed all the way around and elevated off the ground. However, from experience, I can say that these stoves burn their firewood up before the night is over; therefore, you have to get up out of bed in the middle of the night and put more wood in if you don't want to wake up freezing. Another consequence of fully enclosed stoves are having to clean the ashes out when you are done, this can be very messy hot and a fire danger if not done properly. With my design for a camp stove that sticks into the ground over a small dug out area less than 2’ by 3’ all of your ashes simple burn down into the ground and when you are done you just pick the stove off the “hole” and, after a douse of water, put your dirt back where it belongs over the ashes. The clean up is done along with all fire danger reduced to none. This also saves you from having to maneuver a hot stove upside down and having to sweep out hot ashes on the forest ground. Another plus of this system is it is very efficient on putting out heat all night after loading it up before bed. The ground underneath the stove and the dirt you dig out of your “hole” that you pack against the skirt of the stove helps to insulate the coals and the heat. This not only heats up the air like traditional camp stoves, but also disperses heat through the ground on which you are sleeping and acts as a heated floor. I along with my father have built and used this stove design many times in sub zero temperatures while hunting. It has proven itself over and over again to disperse heat all night in the air and ground. In fact some mornings after a heavy snow or blizzard when I would step outside I could see the ground melted at least a foot away from the tent on the side the stove was on. I believe this stove is a more efficient less messy option for a camp stove and think it could be put on the market and advertised relatively easily. After all, who would complain about less clean up, less fire danger, and less wood refill trips in the middle of the night.
