“Dad, I think this the best invention for visually impaired people ever!” (quote by my twelve year old visually impaired son)

Visually impaired people carry a recognition stick. This way, they show other people that they may not see everything. It it also a safety tool when you want to cross the road or move around in town.

But what if want to answer your phone? Grab money from your pocket? Want to use a key? Then you want to put away your cane and have your hands free for a moment.

Here my journey started, with measuring, testing, learning about tolerances, destructive and non desctructive testing, measuring again, testing again, well, you know what I mean. Not only my son, but also other visually impaired people that I asked to test it out, are very happy with their clip.

I take the liberty to stretch this submission for the Transportation contest to Mobility. This clip gives visually impaired people a bit more freedom, much more safety and a lot more mobility. Just mount it to a strap of your bag and get outside!

The print consist of two parts:

The knob is mounted to the base and holds the cane. This version is made for a cane with a diameter of 10mm (= 1 cm). This is the standard diameter for these canes in the Netherlands. Should be printed in FLEX filament, so that it can grab you cane. It also needs to be flexible in order to click the two parts together. I used Fiberlogy FiberFlex 40D Graphite with 30% infill. No supports. I recommend a brim. Print time approx. 1 h 30 min.

The base is mounted to a strap. Is best printed in PETG, because this material is strong, flexibel and weather proof. I used Fiberlogy Easy PETG Burgundy Transparent with 100% infill. Print it standing on its side, with one open side on the bed and the other open side looking up. I used a forced support for the part that sticks out to mount the knob. I also recommend a brim. Print time approx. 30 min.

You can turn the knob, so you can mount the clip both to a horizontal and a vertical strap.

Happy Transporting!
