King of Israel and direct ancestor to Christ, David was also a musician and poet and is reputed to be the author of the Psalms. Seated in the left corner of the capital, he plays the fiddle that is resting on his lap. Surrounding him are four musicians. To his right, two of them are playing the harp-psaltery, also known as the rote ("rota" in Moissac) and the drum. To his left, two other (fragmentary) figures may be playing bells and cymbals. In the Old Testament, David is described with the four members of the tribe of Levi who accompany him during the procession and veneration of the Art of the Covenant. The Books of Chronicles mention this episode and list the musical instruments involved: lute, harp, cymbals, trumpet and bugle. The Levites present the liturgy organised by David in the Synagogue. As such, they foreshadow the four Evangelists and the worship established by Christ in the Church.
