Carl the Robot is mainly an exercise in modeling stuff in 123D. I have not made a model with this many parts before, and he was designed on the fly, pretty much. In the form presented here, Carl stands about 8" tall. It is meant to be glued together although you can position the head, arms and waist. Maybe Carl Mark II will have more sophisticated joints.

Printing notes: Print the head with the face up, you won't have to clear any support off the eyes and mouth grille. See the photo for the best position to print the arms. The hips are printed with the back side on the build surface. Torso and legs can be printed upright. The torso is at a slight angle, so I had to use the 'Lay Flat' option in Cura (should be similar settings in other slicers).

I include the file Robo_all.stl which shows Carl all put together, but it is probably not a good idea to print from that file.

Print Settings

Printer:

Tronxy X1 (My Baby!)

Rafts:

No

Supports:

Yes

Resolution:

0.2

Infill:

15%

Notes:

Use support carefully, and use support everywhere on the legs. Preview the sliced parts and be sure all the dangley bits have good support.

Post-Printing =============
Remove support, and you may need to sand, file, etc to get all the stray bits of support. Glue the legs at least and any other parts as needed. You can position them to your liking (except the legs--Carl's gotta stand) before gluing. I intend to add a bit of paint to the centers of his eyes and the circles on his chest. The slot is there for paper input/output :)

10 FOR N=1 TO 10

20 PRINT "HELLO WORLD"

30 N=N-1

40 IF N > 0 GOTO 20

How I Designed This

Done literally from the ground up. I designed a foot, then a leg to go with it until I had a robot. There are a few errors and questionable design decisions, but heck, this was a learning project and next time I'll know better!

Category: Model Robots
