Carved Figure, Melrose Abbey

Carved Figure, Melrose Abbey

sketchfab

This fragment of a sculpted dragon-like creature has been crafted in medium-grained sandstone. It is badly damaged, with one side and the upper part of the stone apparently cut away, suggesting the stone has been re-used at some point. Part of a head remains which resembles a lion, and the stone below has been textured to represent scales. What appears to be the creature’s tail curls over on one side of the head. This was once a part of Melrose Abbey, created in around the 1200s. For information on visiting Melrose Abbey see our website. 240 x 352 x 228mm MEL/SCP/7 | Rae Project
