This is an enclosure for 3 sensors, a display and a ESP32 to run them all.

It has quite some volume and a lot of air vents and it keeps the sensors in pockets that can be sealed with a bit of gum to keep the influence of waste heat within the case on the readings of the BME280 sensor as small as possible.

There is also a thin extra layer which you can stuff into the rear part of the housing to insulate the mcu from the rest of the housing.
In combination those measures seam to have reduced the error by about 2.5°C compared to another housing ( https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4068963 ) which was optimized for temperature itself and has a similar pocket design for the sensor but less vents and less volume. And it still shows higher temps than without a housing. The BME280 sensor creates some heat itself and that shows.

Besides keeping exhaust heat in check the volume of this box serves 2 other aims: keepma distance between the PIR sensor and the mcu and space to fit in all the cables. I was lazy and didn't make my own cables - 15 a 5cm would be enough - but used readymade dupont cables with 10cm length each, and all that wire needs somewhere to go. And the other issue is that those PIR sensors often fire a lot of false alarms when they are located too close to that WIFI antenna of a mcu.

I used a BH1750 for light measurement in the other pocket and a big HC-SR501 PIR sensor.

PIR, display and mcu sit on pins that keep them in place but 2 srew sockets are provided left and right from the display so you can screw some sort of holder at it's back if you need it. (0,96 I2C OLED Display)

The box has 2 feet at the front so that it doesn't sit flat on the ground. That's meant to allow better airflow but it also helps to read the display when it sits in front of you at the desk. Almost an air of late 1950's design...

Freecad sources are in the package, the box is parametric with many, many fields - still, you can adapt it to your needs with some changes in a spreadsheet.

As a sidenote: how thingiverse decides which .stl is worth of an 3d-preview and which not is beyond me. Currently, the one .stl that would actually be interesting to see in a 3d preview doesnt allow that. Go figure...
Category: Electronics
