Castor adapter plate

Castor adapter plate

I built this adapter plate to place an IKEA BESTÅ cabinet on castor wheels, since the cabinet does not provide very much “substance” on the bottom panel - in my optinion not enough for securely attaching wheel plates directly using wood screws.

Instead, the adapter plate is attached to the cabinet using a single M8 countersunk thread screw, taking advantage of the thread holes built-in to the cabinet, originally used to screw in the included height adjustment feet (see photo). When using the adapter plate, you obviously lose the ability to height-adjust the cabinet feet.

A single M4 countersunk wood screw prevents the adapter plate from rotation. Be sure to place this screw at the left/right outer (!) side of the cabinet, where you will find some substance holding the screw.

The castor wheels plate is attached to the adapter plate using M5 hex nuts (inserted in the adapter plate before attaching the plate to the cabinet) and M5 flat heat screws.

You will need (for a set of four castor weels):

a set of 4 castor wheels with holes in a grid of 32x45 mm
(e.g. https://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B07D2G9X76)

4x M8x25 countersunk screws

4x M4x25 countersunk wood screws

16x M5 hex nuts

16x M5x10 flat head screws

Note: The thread section of the M5x10 screws is 1 mm longer than the height of the adapter plate. This will be compensated by the height of the castor wheel plate. If you use thinner wheel plates, you may need M5x8 screws.

I printed in white PETG using these settings:

Perimeters: 4

Min. shell thickness (top/bottom): 1.2mm

Fill density: 30%

Fill pattern: Gyroid

Layer height: 0.2mm QUALITY

Version History

V.7 - Fixed incorrect distances between holes

V.6 - Added a small “V.6” label (hidden after attaching to the cabinet).

V.5 - Added some extra clearance to screw holes.

V.4 - Added some extra clearance to completely hide countersunk screw heads.
