Catapults are ancient siege engines used to launch projectiles over walls and fortifications. They consist of a long beam, called a torsion spring, which stores energy as it is wound up. This stored energy is then released, propelling a projectile forward at high speed. Catapults were typically powered by human labor, with soldiers winding the torsion spring to build up tension. Once the spring was fully wound, the soldiers would release their grip on the beam, allowing the stored energy to propel the projectile through the air.
