chainring guard

chainring guard

thingiverse

this is a PTEG printed chainring guard. it was designed and printed because none of the dimensions appear to be standard (its difficult to buy the correct part) and I wanted to mount the guard by four holes that were not being used, located in the large chainring. many aluminum guards that are standard are mounted using the same bolts that hold the gear, meaning that you would have to buy longer chainring hardware. this design uses no metal fasteners. The part has four 5.5mm post that extends thru the chainring that are hot staked to the backside of the chainring, pictured. hot staked means that you heat the head of a bolt with a torch and melt the extruding plastic down level to gear. you can remove the gear from the bike but not remove the guard from the as its permanently attached. I have yet to determine how durable this is.
