Alabaster has been quarried at Chellaston since the Mediaeval period. The industry has enjoyed two major periods of working; the 15th and 16th centuries and the 19th century. Alabaster is a form of gypsum and comes from a large band of Keuper Marl which extends across England, including workable deposits in Staffordshire, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. Together they are known as Midlands Alabaster.
