Our sour cherries (morello) were too small for the commercial cherry pitter and got mashed through its hole. If you try this on regular sweet cherries try scaling up 120% or so. The version with a spring mechanism is actually useful if you need to pit a large amount of cherries, but the minimal hammer version is only a little better than a knife and is included merely because it is easier to print and illustrates the hammer mechanism.
