I designed this chess set for the McFarland Youth Center (McFarland, WI, USA) where I volunteer to build a chess club. The board is 20x20 (inch) Russian Baltic Birch which I found at a local building store. The chess board was drawn on the board and then burned into it (pyrography) after which an acrylic wash (diluted artist pigment) was used to color the 'black' (green) squares while letting the grain show through. The MYC logo was also burned into the board's corners but then painted in solid acrylic. The chess pieces consist of a base, a cup of 1mm thick PLA, which was filled with Portland cement (Quick-Crete) to give the pieces a solid feel. Once the cement, which was level with the top of each 'cup', was fully cured the top was painted with a thin coat of black acrylic to provide a solid background for the piece icons. The icons which identify each chess piece were 3D printed in two colors - yellow and orange in this case - and were then glued onto the black acrylic topped base. (note pawns are smaller diameter bases than the other pieces). These pieces were designed to have to look of the pieces of the chess sites found on the web so that they would be familiar to the children - as well as having the standard "rank and file" notation marked on the chess board so that they are familiar with this notation as well. When the adhesive was dry all of the pieces received a "top coat" of thick two-part clear plastic (casting or pourable) which was carefully painted on to protect the pieces from their middle school users ;-) How I Designed This Design notes The design for the chess pieces was derived from a screenshot of one of the online chess sites (lichess.org, chessclub.com, etc.) and then imported into Inkscape. The designs were then 'cleaned up', cropped, modified, etc. to produce the .svg files given. FreeCAD was then used to create the .stl file by importing the .svg files ('image' workbench) and then (after re-sizing the image for 25x25 mm) using the 'part design' workbench - to create a sketch in the same plane (the .svg image in background). Note: The pawns were 'padded' thinner than the larger pieces for their .stl files.
