Chess is a two-player strategy game played on an 8x8 checkered board with 64 squares. It's popular worldwide among amateurs and pros, who start with 16 pieces each - king, queen, rooks, knights, bishops, and pawns. Each piece moves uniquely; the queen is most powerful, while the pawn is least. Aim is to checkmate the opponent's king or win via resignation or draw. Originating in India, chess rules evolved in Spain and were standardized in the 19th century. The World Championship, under FIDE, has seen Norwegian Magnus Carlsen as the current champion. FIDE also organizes several championships and titles are awarded to skilled players, with grandmaster being the highest title. Chess is recognized as a sport by the International Olympic Committee and computers have significantly impacted chess theory and competition.
